When working with multiple effects, layers, high resolutions and large file sizes, Adobe After Effects CC may occupy more CPU usage which ultimately slows down the software. You can take action to prevent this by pre-rendering layers, using proxies, working in lower preview resolution and closing other running applications through task manager (if using Windows).
Use the rectangular mask tool to crop a layer inside of Adobe After Effects. To adjust the size of the layer, simply open the transform properties, then use the either increase or decrease the scale properties to suit your likings. Alternatively, you can go to right click on your composition and press "composition setting' to adjust the dimensions/resolution of your composition.
To group layers in Adobe After Effects CC, drag the cursor from the empty space in the layer window besides the timeline. To merge the layers into one, simply right click and select 'pre-compose'. You can then choose whether you'd like the effects, masks and other layer properties to remain inside the current composition, or move to the composition being created.
Select the layer(s) you would like to cut and press CTRL + SHIFT + D to slice them into two.
Select the solid layer, then go to Layer > Solid Setting and select the colour box icon to choose your own colour. Alternatively, you can select the solid layer then simply hold down CTRL + SHIFT +Y.
Unfortunately there is no free way to legitimately download after effects, however there are free and low-cost alternatives that work almost as well.
