Does DaVinci Resolve 17 & 18 have transitions? Yes, not only does Davinci Resolve 18 have the effects to make your own custom transitions, but it also comes with a few transition presets that you can drag and drop directly onto your video layer without having to make other changes. If you're looking for better transitions, you can find bundles on websites like Motion Array, VideoHive and Envato Elements. Or you could just browse through the packs featured on this page.
Let us break it down for you. When it comes to transitions in video editing, you need to have half as many frames as the length of the transition itself to make it look smooth. So, for example, if you're working with a 30 frames-per-second timeline and you want to use a 1-second cross dissolve transition, you need 15 frames of overhang from each of the two clips involved.
The reason you need extra frames is that there's not enough footage available to execute the transition seamlessly. Therefore, you have three options: do the transition, skip it entirely, or trim some footage from each clip to create enough frames for the transition. If you choose the latter, DR, the editing software, will allow you to add the transition.
Okay, so first you'll want to go to the "Edit" page. Then, just click and drag your cursor over the timeline to select the clips where you want to add transitions. Now, for the shortcut: if you're on a Windows computer, hold down "Ctrl" and press "T". If you're on a Mac, hold down "Command" and press "T". This will automatically add transitions between all of the selected audio and video clips. And just like that, your transitions are done!
We added a tutorial at the top of this page for adding downloaded transition packs to DaVinci Resolve. But to install a transition plugin, you'll need to double click the plugin on your file explorer or finder app, then follow the installation wizard to add it to DaVinci. You will need to specify the installation location, so make sure you have that sorted out prior.
Just as for transitions, you can also find plenty of free and paid custom effects for DaVinci Resolve online. There are a bunch of places online where you can find them! One option is to check out the official Blackmagic Design website. They've got a bunch of free effects you can download from there. Another great place to look is Videohive. They've got a huge selection of both free and paid effects, transitions, and presets that are compatible with DaVinci Resolve. You could also try checking out Motion Array or FXhome for more options. So don't worry, there are plenty of places to find awesome effects and make your videos look even cooler!
DaVinci Resolve includes approximately 44 neat built-in transitions that you can use to create a seamless flow between your video and audio clips. These transitions include things like dissolve, dip to black/white, push, and more, and can be found in the "Effects Library" tab of the software. Unlike Premiere Pro, After Effects and other video editing programs, DaVinci Resolve 17 & 18 has a feature called Fusion that lets you create your own transitions and effects using its node-based compositing interface. You can design transitions using shapes, animations, and visual effects, and use keyframe animation to control the timing and movement of each element. Once you're done, you can save your custom transition as a preset for future use in your projects. This gives you even more creative control over your video editing and helps you make your videos look really unique.
Apart from downloading the 100s of free (and paid) transition bundles from this list and on popular sources such as VideoHive, you can also find plenty of transition presets for DaVinci Resolve on YouTube and on blogs. Freevisuals is a website that hosts 1000s of assets for other editing programs like After Effects and Premiere Pro, but currently doesn't have anything for DaVinci Resolve. Fortunately, we are planning to introduce assets for DaVinci Resolve in late 2023 or 2024.
Like we mentioned in the intro of this article, the way you choose to use transitions can either make or break video projects. It doesn't matter if you create documentaries or YouTube videos, sooner or later, you'll find the need to use transitions presets in your video.
