Frequently Asked Questions

What is a video overlay?

A video overlay is a visual element placed on top of your footage in the editing timeline to add effects, textures, or graphics. Overlays can include light leaks, particle effects, glitch distortions, bokeh backgrounds, smoke, fire, and more. They are typically composited using blend modes like Screen or Add to blend seamlessly with the footage underneath.

What blend mode should I use for overlays?

Most video overlays with a black background use the Screen or Add blend mode which makes the black areas transparent and reveals only the bright overlay elements. Overlays with a white background use the Multiply blend mode. The correct blend mode is listed on each individual overlay download page.

Are these overlays compatible with CapCut and mobile editing apps?

Yes, most overlays on FreeVisuals are compatible with CapCut and other mobile editing apps that support blend modes. Some complex overlays may require desktop editing software for full compatibility. Compatibility is listed on each individual download page.

Can I use these overlays for commercial projects?

Yes, all free overlays on FreeVisuals are licensed for personal and commercial use including YouTube videos, client work, advertising, and social media content. Always check the individual overlay page for any specific licence conditions.

What file format are the overlays?

Most overlays are available as MP4 video files with a black background, designed for use with Screen or Add blend modes. Some overlays are available as MOV files with an alpha channel for true transparency. The file format is listed on each individual download page.
